Bad Christmas Vacation?? Oopps

Why does movies starring two people I normally like have to look as terrible as Four Christmases? Why? First off, there's that terrible conceit, completely set up and given away in the trailer: Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon never spend Christmas with their families, but this year they get stuck at the airport and their families see them on the news (how many times has that happened to you? I know! All the time, right?!) so they can't avoid Christmas any longer. For them, that means four Christmases, though, and all of them are full of famous people in roles that make them look like idiots: Jon Favreau as a musclehead (and if that's really what he looks like now, I have to know if he's been using supplements, or steroids, because I remember just a few years ago when he was fat); Robert Duvall as Vaughn's pervy dad; Sissy Spacek as Vaughn's mom, who's dating a much younger man, who was Vaughn's best friend in school; Kristin Chenoweth and Mary Steenburgen as Reese's sister (I think) and mom, respectively. There are very hilarious and original jokes, such as: Reese used to be fat and Vince sees a picture and makes fun of her. She gets trapped in the bounce house with a bunch of rowdy kids. Vince's brothers (trained UFC fighters) beating the you know what out of him. A baby projectile-vomits on Reese's cute black dress. Um, yeah, hilarious. I think it's so funny that I'll avoid seeing it so that I don't hurt myself with the laughing. I need to check out more Movie Reviews before watching a similar movie.

I saw a HYPED of Four Christmases on EverHYPE. Check it out other Action Movie Reviews at Everhype.

My resolution

New Year's Eve has always been a time for looking back to the past and forward to the coming year. It's a time to reflect on the changes we want or need to make and to resolve to follow through with them. The way to keep your New Year's resolution is to pick a good goal and then change your life in order to meet it. Tradition dictates that every 365 days, you should try to kick your bad habits and start your life anew. It is a good time to help your child make some New Year's resolutions, to set long-term goals, and to get a fresh start for the year. The quickest New Year's resolutions to be broken are usually quickly formed and poorly thought out.

New Year's Day is a time of new beginnings so people often make resolutions or you might call them promises or goals that they hope to accomplish during the coming year. The holidays are over and the New Year will begin tomorrow. Most of us start the New Year with good intentions of sticking to our ‘resolutions’, but few of us actually ever do. This year try making some simple, yet life changing New Year’s resolutions that will benefit you, your family and the environment. These simple changes in your daily routine continued throughout the year can make a difference.

I need someone to hold me accountable to my goals. If you don't mind, please do check in on me and ask how my resolution are coming along

My 2009 resolutions:
1) Lose 10 pounds
2) Write at least 3 post a day
3) Smile more often to strangers
4) Have at least 20 minutes of personal time a day
5) Learn snowboarding
6) Buy a new house

Blog from a Vacation

There’s a general feeling that we bloggers can write from any location, anywhere world wide. Portable computers and WiFi suggest that physical location is irrelevant. You could blog about stocks from a beach in Thailand, new Apple gear from a snow bank in Maine, or culinary adventures from a carpeted airport floor.

But after a vacation in a more rural environment in Asia last year around this time, my opinion of “blog anywhere” has changed. I brought my laptop, but my access to the internet was limited, as was my interest in writing due to a flurry of holiday activity, like non stop delicios tropical fruits and to die for food cuisines.

My experience: Some places I stayed at lacked Internet access (don’t ask) while others didn’t have WiFi. At one point I resorted to transferring files to another computer via burned CD.

A basic level of physical comfort is required for inspiration. Imagine being locked in a completely empty room with only an Internet-enabled computer and a television. After a few weeks of confinement, you may be unmotivated to write.

In conclusion, the dream of blogging while on the go is achievable, but you may want to consider your blogging needs and where you draw inspiration before leaving home. It’s more complex than just packing a portable computer and vowing to write when time permits. I’ll definitely blog a bit smarter next time I board a plane!

Snowboarding

Three days back I was chatting with my friend. I use to crack stupid jokes for which my friends used to laugh a lot. I am eagerly waiting for our upcoming ski trip. I am sure that we could go in February of 2009. While I was chatting with my friend I came across the site www.buysnow.com. This site is a place were people can find snowboarding products such as snowboards, snowboard bindings, snowboard boots, snowskates, snowboard outerwear, goggles, snowboard tuning equipment, and snowboard videos. I was really glad to came across this site. I also asked my friends to check out this site. I guess she liked the site as I do. My favorite product in this site was Burton snowboards. They provide the best snowboards in the world at a cheap and affordable rate.

I love snow. If you're reading this, chances are you love snow, too. Sadly, love can be dangerous...even fatal but I can't wait to get up to the mounstains come January 2009!

Cut down on coffee

Every year around this time we all make our New Year's resolutions. We're going to lose weight, stop smoking, not bite our nails, be nicer to each other, make more money, and generally become the most perfect, awesome people in the world. It doesn't usually work out, of course, and we're forced to come up with more realistic resolutions ("I cut down on the number of mocha lattes I have each day from 5 to 4!"). I am sure this will save me a bunch of $$ once I stop going to Starbucks.

Well maybe stop going to Starbucks might be too radical of a decision. If you are really intent on patronizing Starbucks and watching your weight in the new year, why not try the original skinny drink? It's called black coffee, sweetheart.

And if you want it to taste more smooth and rich, pour in four tablespoons of half-and-half (still only 80 calories) and a whole bunch of cocoa powder. Now you have your delicious fat along with intense chocolate and coffee flavor without those freaky artificial sweeteners and that tragedy known as non-fat milk. And it will only cost you about $1.85. It's better than $3.00+ coffee

Student Credit Card

When I started college, the opportunity to obtain a Student Credit Card was not there. Now a days the junior and senior high school students get the offers directly to them in the mail. Times have changed. My mom and dad probably would have cringed at the thought of me having my own credit card at the age of 18. Times really have changed and we as parents need to look at this scenario much differently then our parents did.

In today’s society if you do not have a credit card it is really hard to do much of anything. You can not rent a car for instance. What if your child is away for college and they need to get home. A car ride in most cases is much less expensive then a flight, but with out a credit card of some kind, they simply will not be able to rent the car. This is just one example out of many scenarios that having a credit card is necessary.

Of course, do not get me wrong. Just handing an 18 year old a credit card with no instructions or explanations is definitely a dangerous situation. We as parents need to help them understand the pit falls as well as the benefits of credit cards and credit.

Maybe starting a little earlier in life, like at 16 is a good year to teach your child about credit cards and credit. That does not mean you need to go get them a Student Credit Card at that time. What it means is teach them about your credit. What did you do to build your credit and obtain those credit cards, car, and home? If you had some struggles along the way. Do not hide that from them. Let them know. They might be able to learn from your mistakes.

Explaining the importance of credit and how you can build it in a productive but slow manner is also going to be helpful to them. Explain you do not just graduate from college get a job and buy that new car or home. It is something you have to work at for sometimes a few years. Knowledge is a powerful tool and preparing your child for the future is also power. You do want to give them all the power you can so they will be successful.

As parents we do need to change our way of thinking when it comes to teaching our children. Let them know the bad as well as the good. Not all, but some of those kids will learn from it. Unfortunately, there are those that have to experience before they learn, and that is ok as well. If they start out the wrong way, it may take a year or two, but they will be able to fix it. So, I do encourage all of you parents out there to take the initiative to teach your children about credit. The student credit card offers are out there and very easy for them to obtain. So, the changes are they will get one with or without your knowledge. So teach them so the know how to handle this new power.

Christmas 365 days a year

Overall Christmas was great in our household. There is a living room full of boxes right now that we’ll have to get clean up tonight so that it will be in a nice organized pile of chaos. Garbage men must HATE the holidays because of all the extra boxes they have to pick up. Only weekend that might be worse is move in weekend with all the colleges. That can’t be fun either. Tip the garbage man would be a nice thing to do.

I have the next 30 days to look forward to since my wife will be leaving for the Orient on coming Sunday and my son keep asking me, who is going to cook daddy? I kept telling him, don't worry son, daddy can cook and we will manage. My son gives me a very skeptical look after that and he seem to cling on to mommy even more these days. I try bribing him today and another Thomas train but that only lasted for 15 minutes and he was right back to mommy's arm again. Well, I guess I will worry about that later when mommy does leave on Sunday. I thought up a few things in the meantime to perhaps take my mind off and here they are.

Here are a few suggestions for how you can live the spirit of Christmas every day of the year.

1) Continue to look for opportunities to give to others throughout the coming year. Harness the same thoughtfulness you had at Christmas to intentionally bless those who are less fortunate in the months ahead.

2) Keep a CD of Christmas songs in your home, car, or iPod and listen to these songs throughout the year. The messages of these songs are just as relevant in the summer months!

I still have a problem, my son is still asking me...daddy who's going to cook when mommy is not here..can we move in with the neighbors? That mommy will be there all year round! :)

After Christmas Sale

Forget getting up at 4 a.m. on Dec. 26th, which I’ve been known to do on occasion, like, every other year. I have experienced the impossible this year perhaps of age, and I guess so have you if you’ve been in any store whatsoever this month. Things that you would think were in high demand — wrapping paper, lights, decorations —are all available now after Christmas sale, at 60, 70% off but most stores I have been to seem pretty empty. It's really a bad economy.

It was a wonderful holiday season, despite news of the world’s financial crisis blaring from every nearby television screen or newspaper headline. It’s the day after Christmas, the family is busy cleaning up, putting away gifts, getting their homes back in order and doing fun stuff with their kids. My wife is working, thinking about my proposal that we get after some good after christmas sale items? I am basking in the post-celebration glow, pondering how my waistline got so big, wondering how long it will take me to drop the extra weight, and wondering if I’ll still fit into my jeans. Well it's a bit tighter but still fits. :)

In a week, it will be time to plan ahead, think ahead, and well, write ahead.

Ski Camp

Need a ski vacation in the summer? Try summer camp at National Alpine Ski Camp. This skicamp has been running camps on Mount. Hood for 26 years. Quality, not quantity, is what separates them from the other camps on Mount. Hood. An extremely low 6-to-1 camper to coach ratio allows them to quickly identify and facilitate the motivation and movements of each racer, and then customize an individual plan accordingly.

National Alpine Ski Camp offers six, 10-day sessions or combine two 10-day sessions for a double session. They train GS and slalom daily and all the National Alpine Ski Camp and I hear all the coaches are returning again this season. The National Alpine Ski Camp campus is at Copper Spur Resort located on the north side of Mount. Hood. Campers stay in log cabins clustered around the National Alpine Ski Camp campus, each with spiral staircases, fireplace and TV for video movement analysis. Full, 24-hour supervision is provided by the NASC coaches who live in the cabins with the campers. The food is prepared by the chef at the Spur Steakhouse, which is also located on the NASC campus at Copper Spur. More than 10,000 campers agree that National Alpine Ski Camp rocks.

A Christmas reflection

I am sitting here and the house is quiet after a night of festivities. Everyone is still sleep and it's right after Christmas. I guess its a good time to count my blessings. I have a wonderful wife, a chubby boy, and alot of kind and caring friends. It is nice to get back to the daily routines and count the good things that happens everyday. The 26th is just another day. The Sun will come up and it's time to clean house!

I hope you enjoyed a blessed Christmas with your family and friends and that you took a moment to pray for those who observed Christmas in less than favorable circumstances. We tend to think of Christmas as a season or as a one-day observance. However, Christmas is much more than that. All things considered, people tend to be a little more loving, thoughtful, and kind at Christmas. We should continue doing so year-round.

History will tell

George Bush and his legacy as president of the United States — what do you think? Is it too early to tell since the war on terror will mark the legacy of his presidency?

When Bush was sworn in eight years ago, who would have thought things would have turned out in this manner? Even folks in his own party have dismissed him, opposed his leadership and pleas, and he was widely ignored at his own party’s convention. Now I know that 9/11 changed everything, but who would have think? President Bush done some good things, and I think he deserve more credit — as others have — for his substantive work and commitment to issues of global poverty and terrorism.

History will remember Mr. Bush as the liberator of 50 million Muslims, the pioneer of faith based assistance in government, higher standards in public education, valiant and successful protector of America in her hours of need, and the initiator of reforms in Social Security that were refused by democrats,

While contemporary commentators may condemn President Bush, historians will condemn them in due season. George W. Bush was/is a great and historical president in my humble opinion.

Read about Karl Rove's defend for President Bush. He defended him in the Lion's Den.

Don't throw a shoe

I cannot stop watching the President Bush incident! just a few days ago. Having a shoe thrown at you is very disrespectful and no man/woman deserves that treatment; especially when you are representing the most powerful nation in the world. It's because of President Bush that an Iraqi reporter have the freedom to throw a show at someone. Imagine this happen when Saddam was in charge. This guy probably would have had his whole neighborhood tortured and torched!

Bush Shoe Attached

It’s humiliating, it’s degrading, it’s taking a man in front of the world and reducing him to a ducking coward; it’s inappropriate for any head of state to have to face a flying shoe (and in the middle eastern culture, it’s VERY degrading…it’s like having someone spit on your face in public).

I felt so bad for him and what a terrible way to mark the last days of President Bush's presidency. Maybe I feel extra-bad for him because I see him still being bombarded by the media and the world. I believe in the years to come, History will see President Bush in a different light. He is coming back to Texas after January 20th and he had been quoted as saying “I will leave the presidency with my head held high.” He should because he had made our family safer.

Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, Elvis, Louis Armstrong

Christmas is my favorite time of year, for all the conventional reasons, and Christmas music is for me an essential part of it. I listen to it as much as possible throughout this season. (I have found, that this music does not work for me during other times of the year.) Unfortunately, there have not been many truly great Christmas songs composed during the past couple of decades, which means that most of the really good Christmas music is highly familiar to anyone who enjoys the airs of the season.

Given that engendering a worshipful feeling is a strong part of the appeal of Christmas music for me, the specter of boredom is of course something to be avoided at all costs. Of course, the true classics never fade. By this I refer, naturally, to the major Christmas albums of Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong and Elvis Presley. All of these are quite beautiful and moving. Their makers were incredibly skilled vocal performers, and their talents easily overcome whatever human flaws these gentlemen may have had. The spirit shines through.

Merry Christmas and this is the favorite time of the year!

Enjoy the music here:
1) Nat King Cole
2) Elvis
3) Louise Armstrong
4) Bing Crosby

It's my wonderful life

It's a Wonderful Life with Jimmy Stewart is probably my favorite movie of all time. This black and white favorite is a must see in my family every Christmas. It brings life back in to perspective especially after such a tumultuous year. By disclosing this fact I have aged myself but I really don't care. The classic Frank Capra movie grips my heart every holiday! I am a sucker for happy endings. The movie's message is that every person is important, and we are all connected in ways we don't even notice. Even the smallest action can have a big impact on another person. It helps us to count our daily blessings.

Are you a fan of It's a Wonderful Life? Or do you think the movie is too sentimental and old-fashioned? If you like the movie, read on. I've got a link to an awesome article. Time magazine's Roger Rosenblatt wrote an amazing essay about It's a Wonderful Life in year 2000. I can't do Rosenblatt's essay justice, if you love It's a Wonderful Life, you'll like the essay. Here's a preview:

Most of the the time, we go along clouded by the suspicion, often justified, that we're alone in the world. Then once in a while, miraculously, we're proved wrong. Friends appear at the front door prepared to gather round and save us....suddenly we have company. Suddenly it's a wonderful life. I went to the hospital yesterday because a friend of the family had a healthy 8 pounds baby boy. Seeing this family together is another chapter of it's a wonderful life. Careful don't take the "f" away and if you do it's a wonderful lie.

I'd love to hear what you think.

The phone rang

The phone rang and it was from overseas. My wife answered the phone and after 10 minutes, her voice began to rush like the melting ice flowing in to the great river. The news wasn't good and needless to say we may not be spending Christmas together as a family for the first time. She had to make a trip back home to Hong Kong. Her father health is deteriorating and will be undergoing some additional cancer treatments. The prognosis is a big unknown. My son came home from school and he knew from our faces that something was wrong. He quietly played by himself with his trains in his room leaving mommy and daddy alone. Mommy was worried for grandpa's health and grandma's heart. Later that evening, mommy decided to check on our little boy but she found him kneeling by his bed. He was praying for Grandpa.

Chrsitmas Christmas Christmas Christmas Christmas x infinite times!

Christmas, the holiday that dare not speak its name. Ah, jeez. What a terrible problem! Our little boy came home from school the other day and he showed us a "Christmas Card" that his teacher had given him. The front cover is a nice class picture of cute innocent little kids with apple cheek smiles. They were all dress to fit the holiday season red and some even had adorable little spunky rudolph's nose. Inside the card, it reads Happy Holiday love teacher.

As my boss puts it: “It’s beginning to look a lot like that holiday that we can no longer mention due to it being politically incorrect.” And, it is. At my work, there are Christmas holiday trees all over, and cute Christmas winter baubles. They have a new line of super cute dishware, with a snowflake pattern, perfect for your Christmas end-of-December feast. As you may have caught on by now, the idea of not being “allowed,” to say Christmas irks me a LOT. There’s something that doesn’t sit well with me, when I am always so accepting of other religions, and yet my own religion is being told to hush up about our main holiday.

Here’s the thing. I don’t mind if someone comes up to me and says “Happy Hanukkah!” In fact, I welcome it. I want to know about all the different religions and customs in this country. Canada is meant to be a mosaic. We’re meant to be steeped in multicultralism. We have laws protecting culture. And yet, “Merry Christmas,” is offensive to some? WHY is that?? I simply don't understand. Land of the free???

I understand why the event formally known as the “Christmas Concert,” is now the “Winter Celebration.” I am not asking everyone to participate in Christmas. I am asking that when I say “Merry Christmas,” I get a reply a la “And Happy Holidays to you!” Regardless of anything, this country was founded on Christian beliefs, and it is always going to be part of us. Read the history about our founding fathers. I accept all cultures, and I would like mine to be accepted too. That’s all, no more, no less.

I welcome your opinion on the matter. Honestly, I’m going to say Merry Christmas whether I’m allowed to or not- that’s what I’m used to. How do we expect children in elementary school to know anything about other peoples’ cultures if they’re being forced to assimilate? Is this a violation of Free speech? for limiting teachers to not even say Merry Christmas?

Oh, if only we had been able to say "Merry Christmas"! Here are some interesting facts:

According to Rasmussen Reports, you're right! 84% of Republicans prefer to be hear "Merry Christmas" rather than "Happy Holidays" while only 51% of Democrats like "Christmas" wishes over "holiday" wishes.

Don't be afraid to wish me "Merry Christmas!"

Nikon Wedding

Nikon is always my favourite camera brand. My father had an old Nikon and he passed that along to me and I am still using it after all these years. My first analog camera was from Nikon. My current digital camera is also from Nikon. Nikon always gives you high quality of pictures regardless whether you are skillful photographer or not. I use my Nikon a few years ago in a winter wedding of a close family friend and my friend is still raving about those pictures. He even said, that's what kept their marriage alive during rough patches is by reminiscing through their wedding pictures. WOW..

Nikon is having a great Nikon Hunting Christmas Promotion. For those of you that hunt or spend a lot of time outdoors, they have some really great deals on scopes and binoculars. If you do not hunt or spend time outdoors but have friends and family that do. This would be the perfect gift for them.

Nikon is considered by many, including myself to be the best there is when it comes to optics. So when you can get $25 and $50 gift cards for Nikon pro gear after you purchase a Nikon ATB binocular, that makes it even better. That means that you are getting a reward for buying the best. You can also get a great hunters package that includes a Nikon Pro Staff scope and range finder. That way it will take the guessing out of your shot and give you more confidence in making that long range shot. So if you are buying for yourself or someone else, make sure you get the best. And be sure to use your free gift card so that you can gear up like the pro's.

A Winter Bride

Christmas, to me, is one of the most romantic times of the year. Perhaps I watched "Miracle on 34th Street" too many times as a kid, but it seems like a season of dreams coming true and magic in the air. If the season is magical for you, perhaps you'll want to plan a Christmas wedding? Whether your wedding will take place close to the holiday, or you just want to have a Christmas wedding theme, it is sure to be merry. I only wish that my wedding was during Winter.

It's the most wonderful time of the year, your family is gathered around you, and the church is already decorated. Why not have a Christmas wedding? In the movies, everyone seems to get married in June. But a winter wedding can be terribly glamorous, cinematic and magical. With the right elements, a winter wedding will be a wonderland.

Think about you and your sweetie in the elegant look of old Hollywood; White Christmas, Bing Crosby, Louise Armstrong and chestnuts roasting on an open fire! the groom in tails, and the bride in a white long silk dress with a white fur or faux fur wrap. Evoke the season with "ice" –diamond or diamond-like jewelry. 90% of the bridal gowns are strapless or sleeveless, but that's not so practical for a bride who wants to take pictures outside, or needs to walk any distance. Look for wraps, shrugs, and capes, or dramatic coats. I've always loved the look of a bride in a white dress and a large red shawl, huddled against her groom who has a red boutonnière. And don't forget your bridesmaids! An attractive wrap to wear on the day of your wedding and beyond makes a great bridesmaid present.

Dallas Remodeling

My friend is thinking of remodeling his house but is still undecided if he wants to keep the baby room or have it renovated as a guest room or a play room, you see most of his kids are already adults and in high school. The baby room contains a lot of memories and mostly sentimental ones but their need for a “new” room is also important, so he’s kind of checking her options with Dallas Remodeling since they offer a personalized touch and also Remodeling in Dallas gives you a better value of the house if in case you want to resell it. In these bad housing climate, any edge is an added bonus to get your house sold! And he’s really considering it since they are planning to move to California when their kids start college. Maybe I can buy his house cheap too when they do move. :)

These come at the heels (literally and figuratively) of the first Crocs Lena pair (in bronze) I received last month, also from the Haligi and the Haligilet.

I am hoping against hope that the second installment would involve that coveted Parisian luxury brand that comes in that oh so familiar orange and black box. Yes, guilty as charged, I want that Hermes for Christmas! Now would someone please wake me up from my deep slumber? :D

But who wouldn't want to receive that gift of Hermes? With it's exclusive line of wares, fragrances and leathergoods, owning an Hermes is every woman's dream!

A white rose of solitude

Our nation's presidential election just ended a short 3 weeks ago. We have a new President Elect Barack Obama. Thanksgiving is also just a few days past and now it's exactly 23 days away from Christmas and I am a few pounds heavier after a non stop few days of turkey feast buffet. It's been a great year and I am very thankful especially waking up on an early frigid black Friday morning to line up behind 500 hundred plus people to buy my favorite items along with a few close friends. Even though there were 500 people ahead, I still got the things I want which is a $99.00 22' inch LCD monitor and now I look at the world in whole new perspective. I also have my little boy, my marriage is in tact, good enough health for a person that only exercises once a week and on top of that, the good Lord have bless me in other more worldly areas as well.

The month of December has always been a month about memories. Good and sad memories. Just two years ago, my wife and I spent the later half of December in the hospital ICU with our then 3 year old boy. It's beyond words how thankful I am that it's a vastly different picture this Christmas compare to the Christmas two years ago. Last Christmas, we spent it along with our family members in Asia with laughter that still echo's daily like the radio station that had put on the 24 hour loop of non-stop Christmas music. Christmas can also be a time of lonesome sadness for many individuals.

This story happens a few years ago. One day during lunch, I was walking around in a Walmart store, when I saw a Cashier hand this little boy some money back. The boy couldn't have been more than 7 years old. I overheard the Cashier said, "I'm sorry, but you don't have enough money to buy this doll."Then the little boy turned to the old woman next to him: ''Granny, are you sure I don't have enough money?''The old lady replied: ''You know that you don't have enough money to buy this Barbie doll, my dear.''Then she asked him to stay there for just 5 minutes while she went to look a round. She left quickly. The little boy was still holding the Barbie doll in his hand. Finally, another men walked toward him and asked him who he wished to give this doll to. "It's the doll that my sister loved most and wanted so much for Christmas. She was sure that Santa Claus would bring it to her. "He replied to him that maybe Santa Claus would bring it to her after all, and not to worry. But he replied to him sadly. "No, Santa Claus can't bring it to her where she is now. I have to give the Barbie doll to my mommy so that she can give it to my sister when she goes there. "His eyes were so sad while saying this. "My Sister has gone to be with God. Daddy says that Mommy is going to see God very soon too, so I thought that she could take the doll with her to give it to my sister.''My heart nearly stopped when I heard this. The little boy looked up at me and said: "I told daddy to tell mommy not to go yet. I need her to wait until I come back from the mall. "Then he showed him a very nice photo of him where he was laughing. He then told him "I want mommy to take my picture with her so she won't forget me." "I love my mommy and I wish she doesn't have to leave me, but daddy says that she has to go to be with my little sister. "Then he looked again at the doll with sad eyes, very quietly.
The good hearted Samaritan quickly reached for his wallet and said to the boy. "Suppose we check again, just in case you do have enough money for the doll?''"OK" he said, "I hope I do have enough." The man added some of his money to with out him seeing and they started to count it. There was enough for the doll and even some spare money. The little boy said: "Thank you God for giving me enough money! "Then he looked at him and added, "I asked last night before I went to sleep for God to make sure I had enough money to buy this doll, so that mommy could give It to my sister. He heard me!''"I also wanted to have enough money to buy a white rose for my mommy, but I didn't dare to ask God for too much. But He gave me enough to buy the doll and a white rose.''"My mommy loves white roses."A few minutes later, the old lady returned.

A few days past and I came across the local news paper article regarding an traffic accident involving a drunk man in a truck, who hit a car occupied by a young woman and a little girl. The little girl died right away, and the mother was left in a critical state. The family had to decide whether to pull the plug on the life-sustaining machine, because the young woman would not be able to recover from the coma. Was this the family of the little boy? The love that the little boy had for his mother and his sister is still, to this day, hard to imagine. And in a fraction of a second, a drunk driver had taken all this away from him.

The value of a man or woman resides in what he or she gives, not in what they are capable of receiving........... When almost everyone else around seems to be having fun with friends and family one can see how things might seem worse than ever for those mourning a lost loved one. What would you give this Christmas?

Here are few suggestions -
1) Give Life
2) I am Hungry
3) Get Child

An old Soldier and his wooden bench

The history making US election is finally over and we have a new President-elect Barack Obama. He supports a rapid military withdrawal from Iraq regardless of it's outcome which brings me to ponder about my grandpa's war stories of the past. Grandpa was a proud man and he passed away at the age of 92 just a few years back. I have never served in the military. The idea is fairly laughable since I have virtually no self-discipline and a more-than-healthy questioning of authority. The roots of my appreciation for the military, however, runs deep. My grandfather was a military man himself and his stories have always inspired me to appreciate those who came before me, willingly sacrifice themselves for future generations. I traveled to Taiwan quite often when I was growing up and among one of the most memorable trips was a trip I took with my sister to visit my grandparents in Taipei.

A rooster crows urgently in the distance. I turn over in my bed, immediately feeling the effects of jet lag. A few hours earlier on this summer morning, I had just arrived to visit my grandpa in Taipei, the capital city of Taiwan. This island off the coast of China in Southeast Asia is nearly half a world away. My sister shook me into consciousness with a reference to hot yummy porridge and something about a climb with Yeh Yeh(Grandpa) at Tiger's Head Mountain in Sungshan Nature Reserve on the southern edge of the city.

"Wake up! Wake up! We're going to climb the mountain with Yeh Yeh (my then 72 year old grandfather)."

I looked at the clock and sighed. It is too early. Who would want to go mountain climbing at five in the morning? I wonder and then remember this is Asia, where it's common for the old to exercise early in order to avoid the heat of the day. Upon arriving at the foothills of the mountain, Grandpa tooks us to an open air little street vendor restaurant where we had our yummy breakfast. It was a traditional breakfast where dou jiang and tasty "you tiao" (pronounced YO TEE-YAU) foot-long pieces of dough deep fried until it's dark brown is served. One of the great pleasures of eating breakfast here is to get a hot bowl of soybean milk on a cold crisp almost winter like morning. Allow the steam from the soybean milk to bathe your face as you slurp up the drink and dunk thick slices of sponge cake into the dou jiang. Ahhh...heaven. We sat giggling on wooden benches enjoying fresh mountain air as we sipped up our hot dou jiang. Grandpa normally began his stories talking about these wooden benches that we were all sitting on. He said back then when he was little, these wooden benches were everywhere. They had them in theatres, community events, churches and even in war room command posts.

After breakfast he led us to begin our ascending to the top. The journey will last about 3 hours and besides the beautiful scenery and fresh mountain air, we got to enjoy a little history lesson as well. All his stories were about wars, his escape from China to Taiwan and how his career later took him to many places in the world. Years later, I sat idly on similar benches my grandfather and I would visit on our many long climbs. It is on benches that he would tell me stories, of his life, as well as others he met along the way. Of good times and bad and of loss and happiness.

Grandpa has moved on to a different place as I sat on these benches many years later. I revisit the mountain where my grandpa once took me many times since that early morning day. My grandfather worked hard for many years and traveled to many destinations in the world, but none, I'm sure, similar to the one he has most recently visited. I imagine it to be a place of content for him, a place to relive old memories and seeing old faces. I am sure that he is also comforted by the fact that he must no longer suffered as he did before he moved on.

He, my grandfather, was a master at story telling, which I believe was conjuring up the best in those he met along his journey. I believe this to be true, especially in me, his only grandchild. He believed in me, as if there was no one else to stand behind. On this veteran day and just like those who sacrifice themselves for the future generations, my grandfather did the same for me.

I miss my grandfather, but knows he is sitting on a similar bench, in a different place.
