Soup Ocean

In our household, there are no better comfort food than a bowl of warm Chinese soup. My son loves soup. He needs to have soup at each meal. It brings comfort to me that my little boy still prefers Chinese thin soup versus thick and hearty American can soup. This assures me at least for now, that our culture is still in tact.
A thick bowl of soup is when a spoon is able to stand on it's own when you sink it in to the bowl. There is no way you can do that with a bowl of Chinese soup. The first sentence, my dad used to tell us when we begin each meal is "Yum Tong ah" which means drink the soup. It's almost customary for us to have the soup first then the actual meal. It is meant to wet or marinate our taste buds first prior to the actual meal. At my dinner table now days, I don't even have to tell my little guy, "Yum Tong ah" because even before I say that, the soup is gone.
My hope is for him not to outgrow this habit because as he gets older, sooner or later he is going to find out the ingredients used to make these soup!(Pig brain, Intestines,Chicken feet, mushroom, fish heads, Fish eyeballs and etc. Remember the scene from Indiana Jones when he was at the Indian Village where the eyeballs float up from the soup they were having?) By then, he may not even allowed me to utter the words "Yum Tong ah" but instead he would say "Campbell please...!!!"

Hey I like to drink soup too, my mum used to say if u know how to cook good soups, u can tie down a man. I guess the reverse is also true, if u know how to cook for ur girlfriend, u can keep her with u. Of course, learning to appreciate the soup cooked by your girl/boy friend is juz as impt. Anyway it's a great site, keep it up! =)

Oh wow, Campbells for me too! Young children tend to eat anything and not question it. As a baby I ate chitterlings (pig intestines), now I can't stand to look at them or smell them. I'm adding you to my links page.

I was thinking about having soup for awhile until I read your ingredients. I opted for green tea instead. :) Have you tried bean-curd soup? It's a popular dish here in Korea.

First off let me say your son is extremely lucky to have a father such as yourself. The part about the prayer, I think you are probably already the man your son thinks you are. Now to the soup! I for one love Chinese soup even though I know what goes into it. Of course, I try and not think about such things.
This is my first visit to this amazing blog and you can be sure I will return.
Thanks for visiting LifeIsRisky and I hope you found something of interest as well.

We really should eat more soup before our meals (my family). We tend to gravitate towards salad as the primer, but after reading your article on the importance of soup in your culture, family and life...I am glad that you shared this.

I live in China and I love the soups here. I like to "drink" my soups, not eat them. Your post made me want to go out and get some.

Blogger had been blocked for a couple of months and then all of a sudden they decided to unblock it. So I came by to catch up.

I enjoyed reading your posts.

Hey there, hop over from mybloglog, you got a great blog :)I second that about chinese soups. Funny thing that you mention chicken feet, and fish balls, I did a detox soup post with these 2 ingredients my watercress, goji berries, and figs sometime back & its great. Perhaps you could cook that for your son next time, minus the intestines & all haha.. You could look it up under the soup section in my blog. Cheers !:)

This is a great story and I can truly appreciate your need to keep tradition alive. The world is so different than it was when we were growing up and the little things are what is most important. Enjoy your son and enjoy your soup together! Cheers.

I think it is hard for parents to ensure thier kids maintain thier culture and traditions, especially with children who want to fit in with thier classmates. Sounds like you are off to a good start, and remember if one day he starts wanting Campbells, he will eventually find his way back to his roots as he gets older.
